Modern’s lush costumes fit each character perfectly, with Lindsay Saier creating fine period wigs and hair design. Obviously, such a grand production as “Ragtime” has a huge production team that deserves credit as well: B. ‘Stranger Things’ gets a real-life explorable experience in SFĪlthough none of the songs are what can be described as popular hits, several stand out for their marvelous melding of words and music: “Crime of the Century,” “Sarah Brown Eyes,” “Wheels of a Dream” and“Make Them Hear You.” ![]() Several other finely etched performances deserve mention here: Suzanne Grodner as Emma Goldman (as well as four other characters), and Colin Thomson as Grandfather, Henry Ford and two others. But while he is gone, Mother learns to manage the household quite nicely (and with far more caring) than he ever showed. Father is emotionally distant from his family, even deciding to go on an expedition to the North Pole with Admiral Perry for a year.įather always expects his family to obey him as the head of this upper-class household. She looks completely genuine as she smiles at her young son who is usually doing something that upsets Father (Noel Anthony). His strong voice is masterful, and when his young wife, Sarah (a beguiling Iris Beaumier), is murdered, Coalhouse vows to avenge her killing or die trying.Īs Mother, Christine Dwyer is equally as impressive both in her magnificent vocals and her passionate acting. As Coalhouse Walker Jr., a pianist living in Harlem, Nkrumah Gatling commands the audience’s attention whenever he steps on stage. Several lead actors are solid with soaring voices. (TheatreWorks also produced “Ragtime” in 2002.) TheatreWorks’ founding artistic director Robert Kelley came out of retirement to direct “Ragtime,” something he had hoped to do nearly two years ago when the pandemic shut down theater productions everywhere. The cast of 15 outstanding actors play multiple roles. Set primarily in New York in the early part of the 20th century, “Ragtime” weaves a tapestry of three distinct groups of people in that era: upper-class suburbanites, Harlem-area African Americans and Eastern Europeans who immigrated to America in search of a better life. When it opened on Broadway in 1998, it received 13 Tony nominations and won four. Doctorow’s 1975 novel and made into a musical by playwright Terrence McNally with lyrics and score by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. It’s a thoroughly enthralling story, taken from E. Close to three hours pass by in a flash as the glorious, overpowering story of “Ragtime” unfolds at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, thanks to TheatreWorks Silicon Valley.
